<long-description>
Eyes come in many shapes and sizes, so you need to have an accurate "fitting and evalution" to make sure your lenses will fit your eyes properly. To do this, we will take special measurements of your eyes and its surface, checking for curvature, and other factors that will affect how your lenses fit. You may be asked if your eyes tend to be dry (this is very important in determining which type of contact lens is best for you - there are excellent silicone hydrogels for patients who experience dryness). The front of your eyes will be examined to make sure there aren’t any problems that could contraindicate success with contacts.

Contact lenses are considered a pharmaceutical device and therefore require a prescription. Contact lens prescriptions expire after one year.

    <long-description>
Orthorkeratology is a safe, non-surgical correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism using Paragon CRT, or corneal refractive therapy lenses. These lenses are worn overnight for 8-10 hours to achieve independence from glasses and contacts during the day. CRT lenses are a great treatment alternative for both children and adults.

Even if CRT lenses are not selected for overnight wear, progressive mopia can be slowed down or even halted with traditional gas permeable contact lenses that are worn during normal waking hours. Gas permeable lenses are initially a little more difficult to adapt to, but long term they are more economical than soft lenses and can stabilize vision.

Teresa Lui, Palo Alto Optometrist, Optical Boutique (650) 321-9525 email: info@drteresalui.com
  http://www.drteresalui.com

</long-description>

    <long-description>
We provide pre and post-op consultation and follow-up for those patients interested in LASIK or other refractive surgery corrections. Currently, wavefront lasik is the most accurate refractive surgery for nearsightedness and astigmatism. CK or conductive keratoplasty is a treatment for farsightedness, but has not shown to be permanent. The results fade after 3-5 years. Presbyopic laser corrections are currently under investigation and are NOT FDA approved.

A good candidate for LASIK eye surgery must meet several general requisites. LASIK patients should be at least 21 years old, demonstrate no change in refraction for several years, and have realistic expectations regarding the results of LASIK eye surgery. Patients who have experienced an eye infection or injury in the past year should not undergo LASIK. If you are interested in LASIK, a LASIK surgeon can determine if you are a good surgical candidate for the procedure.

The LASIK Procedure
The traditional LASIK vision correction procedure begins with the creation of a hinged corneal flap. After the eye is anesthetized with topical eye drops, the LASIK eye surgeon creates the flap on the outer surface of the eye to expose the underlying cornea. The flap can be created with a microkeratome (a hand-held device) or with the IntraLase® laser, which allows the surgeon to create the flap using a computer-guided laser. The cornea is then reshaped using an excimer laser and the flap is replaced. Learn more about the LASIK eye surgery procedure.

After LASIK eye surgery many patients experience immediate improved vision, although it can take up to six months for vision to stabilize. Patients can expect a short LASIK surgery recovery period but there is usually little to no discomfort following the procedure. Follow-up exams ensure proper healing.

LASIK Risks and Benefits
Most patients are extremely pleased with their LASIK results. LASIK eye surgery benefits include improved visual activity, freedom from corrective eyewear, and possibly new career opportunities. Patients who achieve a successful LASIK outcome can eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses, and enjoy the freedom of clear vision at all times. Patients can play sports, swim, spend a day at the beach, and participate in various activities without the restrictions that glasses and contacts bring. LASIK eye surgery is a safe and effective treatment that has continued to gain popularity among patients.

According to the FDA, a small number of patients – one to five percent – experience LASIK eye surgery complications. LASIK risks include sensitivity to light, haloed or glared vision, irregular astigmatism, dry eyes, loss of visual clarity, and sensitivity. Fortunately, advances in LASIK technology have dramatically reduced complications and many problems can be easily corrected with additional treatment.

Teresa Lui, Palo Alto Optometrist, Optical Boutique (650) 321-9525 email: info@drteresalui.com
  http://www.drteresalui.com

</long-description>
